Absolutely agree that quality trump quantity in terms of soc med friends, and that a social network carefully cultivated can reap numerous rewards. It's one more avenue for professional networking. (Currently using Tweetsville, but find alot to like in most twitter apps for iPhone. Having multiple high-quality options makes for a nice dilemma. :-) Interesting and insightful article.
